A Night in Santa's Great Big Bag
Viking, 2010
|
It's Christmas Eve, and Louis's favorite stuffed animal, Lamb, couldn't be more excited. While Louis is asleep, Lamb tiptoes downstairs and climbs into Santa's great big bag of presents. Inside is a magical world, filled with new friends: other toys waiting to be delivered as gifts. But soon Lamb starts to miss Louis, and he worries he will never make his way back home. Fortunately, Santa is there to save the day, and Louis is just a short sleigh ride away.
"After Louis tells his favorite toy, Lamb, about Santa's bag of goodies, the stuffed animal sneaks downstairs on Christmas Eve to get a peek--and accidentally ends up in the big man's sack. Lamb chats and plays with all the other toys and tells them what to expect from their new owners, and it isn't until he is alone that he worries that he might end up with someone other than Louis." --School Library Journal |
The Idea Behind the Story
This story about a beloved toy lamb started out in my mind as a story about an unloved alley cat who creeps into Santa’s bag, travels all the way around the world, and finds a home. Most of my ideas steep for a long time in my brain, and by the time I began writing, the cat had become my son’s kindly, curious, and slightly confused toy lamb. It was interesting to climb inside Santa’s bag with Lamb, only to discover that the inside of the bag is much larger than one might guess. |
